Backlit was established in 2008 as a voluntary organisation with the aim of providing graduates with an exploratory curatorial space. Following City Council investment in 2011 Backlit has now relocated to a new space in the Sneinton area of Ashley Street, Nottingham. It has also developed an innovative approach to contemporary artist practice, which underpins the artistic programme with critical debate (artist-led and in partnership with the University and students). Priorities include exhibitions, ‘Backrit’ critical sessions, affordable artist spaces, collaborative cross-artform working, workshops and skills development opportunities for new and emerging artists.
