How to find us

BACKLIT is located in Nottingham’s Creative Quarter, a 17-minute walk from the centre of Nottingham.

If you’re walking from the Old Market Square in the city centre, head east and downhill towards Hockley. Continue down the hill until you reach Sneinton Market. Turn left, past GB cafe and continue walking straight across the square. When you reach the Victoria Leisure Centre on your left, cross over the zebra crossing and continue ahead. Take a left turn on to Liverpool Street and a right on to Ashley Street. Our building will be on your right. Keep walking along the length of the building and you’ll see our main entrance on the corner of Alfred Street South and Ashley Street.

Find us off the B686 Carlton Road, opposite King Edward Park. Limited on-street parking is available (please check local restrictions) and there is a pay-and-display car park nearby in Longden Street. We offer a limited number of disabled parking spaces. Please see our access information for more details.

Public transport

Carlton Road is close by and NCT’s 24, 25, 25B, 26, 26C and 27 buses all stop there. You can catch all of these buses from Nottingham’s city centre. You can find timetable information here.

Although there are cycle lanes along Carlton Road you can avoid heavy traffic by using the minor roads between Sneinton Market and Backlit. You are welcome to bring your bikes inside the building.

BACKLIT aims to offer the best possible experience to everyone who visits us. Although our building was built in 1870, we try wherever possible to be accommodating to those with additional access needs. Please read on to find out more. If you require assistance at any time during your visit, please ask a member of staff who will be happy to help.

BACKLIT occupies 3 floors of Alfred House; the basement, the first floor and second floor.

We have a limited number of parking spaces available for those with walking difficulties. Parking in these spaces will give you level access to the basement floor. From this level, every floor of the building is accessible by a lift. If you are planning a visit, please call 0115 837 2426 to request access to a parking space. If you are visiting at short notice we will always do our best to offer you a parking space.

Our main entrance is situated on the corner of Ashley Street and Alfred Street South. There are two steps leading up to the main entrance which has double doors offering wide access.

Additional parking can be found on-street. Some of this parking is free-of-charge. Please check the parking restrictions yourself before leaving your vehicle. Pay-and-display parking is available a short walk away.

Our basement floor is accessed from street level via a tarmac ramp. Please note that this ramp is not ADA compliant and may be too steep for some people in wheelchairs or those with walking difficulties.

Once you are inside the building, each floor can be accessed by wide stairs or a by a lift.

Please note that if you wish to use the lift from the outdoor street level, you need to access the building from a side entrance on Ashley Street. This entrance has level access and double doors offering wide access. To gain access via this entrance, please call 0115 837 2426 and request a member of staff who will be able to welcome and assist you.

All of our toilets are gender neutral. Unfortunately, none of our toilets has very wide access doors and therefore it is not currently possible to fit a wheelchair into any of our toilets.

For our main exhibitions, a large font guide is available upon request.

Guide dogs are welcome.

To discuss any additional access requirements or lift ahead of your visit please email or call 0115 837 2426
