Empiricle. Edge. Play
Curator: Empirical. Edge. Play.’ Is an experimental exhibition at Backlit art space, curated by director Matthew Chesney, questioning areas of role-play and authorship in contemporary artwork. Mark Davey, will be exhibiting in his first solo show ‘Edging’ at Backlit gallery, Nottingham.
Viewer: Mark Davey? Let me think, the name rings a bell. What does he do?
Curator: Davey was the finalist of Saatchi and Channel 4’s ‘New Sensations’ he makes ordinary elements of everyday life extraordinary by his use of industrial objects, specifically lights. His performative, rotary contraptions entice a fragility that is bound by his use of repetition, making them -
[Chorus] Kiss. Touch. Move. Swing.
Rub. Round. Melt. Ring.
Exploit. Edge. Scrape. Bend.
Object. Play. Point. End.
Curator: The core of human creativity is notoriously difficult to define. Definition of subjectivity that lays emphasis on discursive frameworks, the artist is revealed to be a rhetorical invention operating in much the same way as a coded machine that follows a crude rule-based system, auto-generating what already exists. Interaction codes.
Walter Benjamin: Both the laboratories of art and science require reflexive work to fully comprehend their processes. Invention and Innovation is made possible by groups and individuals operating within social systems and specific discourses. There are expansive traces of creativity that suitably merge artistic subjectivity and social context with technical form. To make a system more intelligent it needs to operate socially, as with a Neural network that needs feedback in order to learn. (The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, 1936)
Viewer: What? When? Where?
Curator: In the Studio we will be exhibiting Backlit member Rachel Eite’s video works that involve the breaking down of former habits, preconceived ideas and ingrained thought patterns and invite an awareness of the present moment. In the Project space Nottingham Trent students Rachel Fox and Marian Stevens will be curating around the theme of authorship (the role of the viewer.) The Box gallery will be exhibiting new work by Simon Raven and Yelena Popova.
[Chorus] Empirical. Edge. Play. Backlit. April 16th – 2nd May. The Private view is 15th April 2010 – Everyone welcome.
