Biography
Martin Lewis background was in ceramics. He exhibited widely throughout the UK, including shows at the Anatol Orient Gallery and the Hart Gallery in London. Articles written about his work appeared in the publications Ceramics; Art & Perception. Sister Wendy Beckett wrote on his work for Ceramic Review. In 1990 he became a fellow of the CPA. In 1992 he began teaching at Warwickshire College as well as being a visiting lecturer at Loughborough College of Art.
In 1998 he studied fine art part –time at Sheffield Hallam University receiving his MA 2002. He stopped teaching in 2009 and now concentrates full time on his practice. Martin’s current concern with drawing and systems began in 2008.
Statement
The Fibonacci number is formed by adding the preceding two numbers to get the next one: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377,
The Fibonacci number system is used as an organising structure for the drawings. Points are marked on a surface. The points are linked to create a line. This line is mapped as closely as possible by a second line. Each preceding line is mapped by a subsequent line until the surface is covered, or a predetermined time limit is reached. One drawing represents one number from the system
The nomadic drawings are part of an ongoing work. In each subsequent drawing the numbers of points placed on it increases in accordance with the Fibonacci sequence;
