MATTHEW CHESNEY

I am an artist curator working across performance and video. Since July 2008 I have been directing and programming exhibitions and events for an artist led gallery and studios in Nottingham, called BACKLIT. As an artist I am interested in exploring absurdist notions of “role-play” within contemporary arts practice. I recently produced a durational performance and video work in which I am still, and weighted by a mound of rocks in a gravel quarry. The work illustrates notions of self-awareness, creative block, and blurs the lines between the duality of positioning / producing, critical mass /making and self-driven interests where the artworks “meaning” is derived from the relationship among many different positions.
