BACKLIT Studio FAQs

We hope that you find the answers to your questions below. If not, just email info@backlit.org.uk and we’ll get back to you.

What kind of artists are you looking for?

We want to encourage active artists that are keen to contribute to the growth of arts within the community and who want to professionally and personally develop their own artistic practice. We love diversity and we are keen to get a mixture of different types of practice on site.

What are you not looking for?

Our Studios aren’t suitable for people looking for affordable storage space.

Who can apply for a Studio at BACKLIT?

If you are a contemporary artist, maker or art collective, you can apply for a BACKLIT Studio.

What is the atmosphere like at BACKLIT?

We are a thriving and active arts community with a friendly atmosphere.

How big are the new studio spaces?

Studio spaces vary in size and start at approximately 3.4 x 3.6 metres.

How much do the studio spaces cost?

Studio spaces start from around £149 per month.

Is there lockable storage for my materials/work?

Each studio space will be fitted with a secure lock if requested. Artists are responsible for taking out their own insurance on their space to cover materials/work.

Is BACKLIT a secure building?

All BACKLIT staff and artists take the security of our building very seriously. The building is secured with a number of access codes.

What are the hours of access?

BACKLIT is accessible to our Studio artists 24/7.

Can I safely use and store hazardous materials such as aerosols in the space?

You may not store hazardous materials in your studio space. We recommend a safe storage unit that can be located in the loading bay, which you can discuss further with a member of staff. If your practice requires excessive use of materias such as aerosols, for example, you must find somewhere off-site. We will be happy to use our networks to help you to find a suitable space.

What other opportunities will I get as a Studio member?

You’ll have the unique opportunity to be involved in the development of brand new Space at a pivotal stage, where you can influence decisions and really make it your own. The Space will also offer a platform for personal and professional development opportunities, such as working with community groups or offering input into gallery programming, for those who wish to access it. This is also an opportunity to become more deeply involved in Nottingham’s thriving arts scene. With a high number of artist-led collectives, small galleries and studios, Nottingham draws in talent from across the east Midlands, so there’s plenty to discover.

Is there parking nearby?

BACKLIT doesn’t have its own parking but there is on street and pay-and-display parking close by.

Does BACKLIT have any tea and coffee making facilities?

Our Studio artists have access to tea and coffee making facilities as well as a microwave.

How do I get to BACKLIT?

BACKLIT is situated in Sneinton. We are a 3-minute walk from Sneinton Market and a 20-minute walk from the Old Market Square in the town centre.

Are the BACKLIT Studios wheelchair accessible?

We have a lift so can provide access for wheelchair users and those with a mobility consideration to all floors, although we do not have fully accessible toilet facilities on site.

Can I come and see the Studio spaces that are available?

Yes! We are conducting tours of the building on April 12th 2019. Click here to book a place.
