Backlit is proud to announce the opening of the new exhibition Hypnosis of the Spectacle. Featuring works by Terry Buchanan, Claire Beale and Aethan Wills Hypnosis of the Spectacle highlights those reflective moments where a distraction, a fleeting thought or a flash of cognizance can stop you dead in your tracks. In Hypnosis of the Spectacle we look at capturing these moments, remembering or exposing them and therefore removing them from their typical, ephemeral context.
Terry Buchanan: The Torment, Photograph, 2009
Holding his head high in the proud manner of a royal prince, he surveyed those who were set to prosecute him, each one devoid of conscience or guilt. They were no greater or lesser than he, and yet, their determined pursuit of his annihilation was intensified by sacrificial torment. Perhaps life was the true definition of hell, and death, the greater blessing. He blessed them.
Claire Beale: Four rolls of argentum candela and niger candela, 2009
Aethan Wills: SnowScape (Sapporo), 2010

No Shway Man!
No Shway Man! is an attempt to utilise the mechanisms of Feng Shui to maximise the potential lying untapped within the works of Alice Gale-Feeny, Gavin Frankhorn, John Harris, Tim Hattrick, Kryssy Naylor, Alex Pain, Finbar Jon Prior and Calvin Sangster. Unifying the works into a single experience.
A local Feng Shui consultant has been given total authority in the curation of the space. Enter the space with an open mind to this unfamiliar convention of considering objects.
