BACKLIT is located in Nottingham’s Creative Quarter, a 17-minute walk from the centre of Nottingham.

From the Old Market Square in the city cente, head east towards the Lace Market until you reach Sneinton Market.  Continue walking straight across the square. When you reach the Victoria Leisure Centre on your left, cross over the zebra crossing and continue straight ahead on to Handel Street. Take a left turn on to Liverpool Street and then a right turn on to Ashley Street. Our building will be on your right. Keep walking along the length of the building and you’ll see our main entrance on the corner of Alfred Street South and Ashley Street. Press buzzer 2 or 3 and we’ll welcome you in!

You’ll find us off the B686 Carlton Road, opposite King Edward Park.

Pay-and-display parking is available a short walk away on Longden Street. Additional parking can be found on-street. Some of this parking is free-of-charge but please check the parking restrictions yourself before leaving your vehicle. We have a limited number of parking spaces available for those who require level access into the building.

Carlton Road is close by and NCT’s 24, 25, 25B, 26, 26C and 27 buses all stop there. You can catch all of these buses from Nottingham’s city centre. You can find bus timetable information here.

If you are travelling by tram, the closest tramstop is Lace Market. Click here for tram routes.

Although there are cycle lanes along Carlton Road, you can avoid heavy traffic by using the minor roads between Sneinton Market and BACKLIT. You are welcome to bring your bikes inside the building.

When you arrive
When you arrive at BACKLIT, our main doors will probably be locked but this doesn’t mean you aren’t welcome! Just press buzzer 2 (gallery) or buzzer 3 (office and studios) and we’ll let you in.

BACKLIT aims to offer the best possible experience to everyone who visits us. Although Alfred House was built in 1872, we try wherever possible to be accommodating to those with additional access needs. Please read on to find out more. If you require assistance at any time during your visit, please ask a member of staff who will be happy to help.

BACKLIT occupies 3 floors of Alfred House; the basement, the first floor and second floor.

Disabled parking
We have a limited number of disabled parking spaces available. These spaces give level access to the basement floor. From this level, every floor of the building is accessible by a lift. These parking spaces are in a private car park. If you are require access to a parking space, please call 0115 837 24 26 and someone will be able to assist you.

The ramp leading down to the basement car park is not ADA compliant, therefore this entrance may not be suitable for those without a vehicle.

Accessing the building
Our main entrance is situated on the corner of Ashley Street and Alfred Street South. There are two steps leading up to the main entrance which has double doors offering wide access.

If you are unable to climb stairs, you will need to access the building from a side entrance on Ashley Street. This entrance is on street level and has double doors offering wide access. To gain access via this entrance, please call 0115 837 24 26 and request a member of staff who will be able to welcome and assist you.

Access within the building
Once you are inside the building, each floor can be accessed by wide stairs or by a lift.

All of our toilets are gender neutral. Unfortunately, none of our toilets have very wide access doors and therefore it is not currently possible to fit a wheelchair into any of our toilets.

For our main exhibitions, a large font guide is available upon request.

Guide dogs are welcome.

To discuss any access requirements ahead of your visit please email or call 0115 837 24 26 and we’ll be more than happy to help.
