Artists

Being a member of the community provides me with a supportive network. A space where I can go to geek out about art, share my experiences and develop my practice.” — Artist, Dom Golden

Memberships

The studio and associate memberships support a diverse community of creatives from recent graduates, students, artists, makers, curators, and writers at all stages of their lives.

All of our members have access to a Members-only Portal where you will keep up to date, find the workshop archive, access member-only events, join studio meetings and find other arts-related resources.

Projects

BACKLIT is a cultural organisation, and our work and research often extend out into different areas of interest. Our projects and partners play a key role in informing and developing our programmes, artists and community. In recent years we have developed work around Mental Health, Digital, Equality and Inclusion, and Environment. Projects for us are a foundation for exploring new ideas, playing, testing and a space to exchange knowledge and skills.

Volunteer

Volunteering at BACKLIT is a valuable way of gaining experience in a public gallery and studios. Our volunteers have since become working curators, artists, creative producers and coordinators achieving major industry projects.

Our volunteer programme is under review, and we are currently not actively recruiting new volunteers. We continue to welcome all applications where you will be on our waiting list. We hope to be in touch when the programme is running again.

You have to be 18 or over to volunteer with us.

We especially encourage applications from candidates who have Black, Asian, Mixed or Global Majority heritage and/or are from working-class/lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

Opportunities

BACKLIT is an equal opportunities charity and continues to employ the commitments set out in our equality policy. It includes not discriminating under the Equality Act 2010. We are consistently working towards building an accurate picture of the make-up of our community through our anonymous equal opportunities forms, allowing us to identify things we need to address.

We especially encourage applications from candidates who have Black, Asian, Mixed or Global Majority heritage and/or are from working-class/lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

Support Us

Supporting arts and culture since 2008, BACKLIT is a charity, no 1167258, and depends on the donations and support from our visitors, patrons and funders.

Donating and supporting BACKLIT helps us achieve our charitable objectives and reinvest in our yearly free programme of exhibitions, events and workshops that support an essential framework for local people, artist development, communities, and creatives at all stages of life to develop.
