Tate Exchange Programme

BACKLIT are proud to be a Tate Exchange Associate.

Tate Exchange has over 60 Associates both from UK and international. These include charities to universities, healthcare trusts to community organisations working within and beyond the arts. Tate Exchange is an ambitious ‘open experiment’ which allows other organisations and members of the public to participate in Tate’s creative process, running events and projects on site and using art as a way of addressing wider issues in the world around us.

During 2017/18 BACKLIT presented a newly developed installation, D.I.Y. Machine, that explored themes of production, engagement and interaction. D.I.Y. Machine took the form of a roulette wheel that invited participants to randomly choose their own experience. The wheel was linked to five creative workshop stations, led by a number of Nottingham-based and Backlit studio artists, who worked with participants in the creation of photography, ceramic, performance, sculpture and more. Exhibiting artists included: Chloe Langlois, Outsider (Pauline Woolley, Mel Kirkham, Val Turton and Julie Moosburg), Booth of Truth (Dominique Golden and Nicholas Clifford) , Daniel Evans-Pugh, Maureen Scott and Hannah Ziółek.

We look forward to working with Tania Bruguera, the lead artists for year three with the theme of ‘Movement’. Details and dates of when BACKLIT will be on site at Tate Modern in 2018 will be available here at a later date.
