Fiona Carruthers is a UK-based artist working across sculpture, installation, performance, photography and sound to explore resilience, adaptation and survival as a lived condition.

Her practice is profoundly influenced by life in vulnerable wetland and coastal landscapes, where uncertainty is palpable, personal and ever-present. Experiences of physical disability and post-traumatic growth following local flooding further inform her understanding of vulnerability, interdependence and adaptation as shared conditions across human and nonhuman life.

Working with found, repurposed and ephemeral materials, Carruthers assembles fragile, precarious forms whose existence depends upon balance, care and the relationships between their parts. Through material, scale and spatial arrangement, her work invites viewers to slow down, adjust their movements and become more aware of themselves, one another and their surroundings. The viewer’s presence becomes part of the work’s fragile ecology rather than remaining separate from it.

Underlying the work is a commitment to hope and the possibility of new ways of being. Care, mutuality and inclusivity are proposed not as abstract ideals, but as quiet, practical tactics for collective survival — gestures towards a better, not-quite-familiar future.
