Neelum Aftab

My artistic practice originated in portraying Pakistani culture and society. Starting from group portraiture of my family members my work has gradually converted into groups of conceptual figures and stylised portraiture over several years. This represented the concept of the third space; a liminal space where cultures and societies are transformed through cultural hybridisation. I have portrayed these figures at different stages of migration and displacement who then reside in the third space during their journey to the unknown.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching art besides working as a practising artist. I am working as an art educator leading a range of art workshops and classes for art galleries, schools, and colleges. I have run different art projects for diverse communities and marginalised groups

To me, art is a never-ending journey which opens new ideas and thoughts to work on whether it’s working on projects with my learners or it’s my artistic practice. It all goes together!
