The Nottingham Asylum Project

In 2021, BACKLIT presented a year-long research project on the history of King Edward Park, Sneinton, Nottingham, the site of the UK’s first county asylum, 1812. The project showcased community research, artist commissions and an online resource. A core strand of research throughout the project was Mental Health; this was an extension of an original exhibition, Exaggerate Everything (2019).

This project has featured on exhibition at The Workhouse and Infirmary, Southwell, supported by: The National Trust.

This project was funded by: National Lottery Heritage Fund. Project Partners: the University of Nottingham, Institute of Mental Health, National Justice Museum and Sneinton Tenants Outreach Project.
