Workshop

In Practice: Medieval Makeovers

alt text should describe the image!

Join us for a workshop led by Dominique and Suzanne Golden, exploring ideas, processes, and approaches connected to Medieval fashion.

Perfect for children and families, this creative session invites participants to explore the clothing, accessories and craftsmanship of the Middle Ages before designing and making their own medieval-inspired creations. Taking inspiration from the exhibition, you'll experiment with a variety of materials to create hats, tunics, footwear or accessories, while discovering how historical fashion continues to influence artists and designers today.

Throughout the workshop, BACKLIT will be transformed into a playful medieval clothesline, celebrating the building's history as a former Victorian textile factory.

Whether you're crafting a royal headdress, a magical cloak, a pair of medieval shoes or an invention entirely your own, this workshop is all about creativity, making and having fun together.

We'll end the session with a light-hearted medieval fashion parade, giving everyone the chance to showcase their handmade creations.

Access

BACKLIT aims to offer the best possible experience to everyone who visits us. Alfred House (built in 1872) is split across four floors, and we do our best to accommodate visitors with access needs.

Step-free access is available via Alfred Street, with street-level entry to our lift. Please note the lift can only be operated with staff assistance. To use lift access, please call ahead on 0115 837 24 26 or email [email protected] so a member of staff can welcome and assist you.

Step-free access is also available via a tarmac ramp with a car to the lower ground floor and Project Gallery. The lift can be accessed from the basement, or via the side entrance on Ashley Street (street level, double doors).

Limited parking spaces are available for those requiring level access to the lower ground floor — please contact us in advance to arrange this.

All our toilets are gender neutral. Unfortunately, none currently have wide-access doors, so wheelchair access may not be possible at this time.

Guide and hearing dogs are welcome throughout the building.

If you would like further access information before your visit, please get in touch and we will be happy to help.
