Performing Gender brought together audiovisual artworks that explored new perspectives of gender and identity in contemporary art. The works in the exhibition deconstructed, questioned and criticised the relationships between gender and society through theatrical performance, documentary filmmaking, and experimental film that blurred the lines of male-female binary conformity. The body became a focus for debate about social boundaries and a quest for non-corporeal identity through which the work was expressed and experienced.
