PUNK: Rage + Revolution
BACKLIT presents Punk - the well-known subculture, through stories and ephemera from the East Midlands and beyond. The exhibition features major collections of original punk objects from across the UK, in partnership with the award-winning exhibition at New Walk Gallery and Soft Touch Arts.
Centring the Nottingham’s punk scene, the exhibition considers the relationship between historic and current socio-political issues. Highlighting the 1970’s subculture, we uncover punk as a transformative era for protest, resistance and youth empowerment. The exhibition acknowledges the experiences of local feminists, and Black and LGBTQueer punks. Considering punk’s significant influence on migrant experiences, we also explore how the subculture’s imagery manifests itself through contemporary art practice.
The exhibition features new commissions and collaborations from BACKLIT in-house GEM Collective, Pending Collective, Leomi Sadler and Klara Szafranska.
Curated by Jazz Swali with support from Matthew Chesney and the BACKLIT team, Soft Touch Arts and Heritage Lottery Fund.
Opening: 17th November, 6-9pm
