Same As It Never Was is an exhibition reviewing the journey of BACKLIT over the last decade with new commissions by studio members alongside objects and resources from a growing archive of material. Same as it Never Was took inspiration from the well-known Talking Heads song ‘Once in Lifetime’ from 1981, which explores the unconscious in which we operate and the opportunity to ask ourselves, ‘How did I get here?’.

The 10th anniversary provided an opportunity for organisational reflection to uncover creative processes, and artistic collaborations, alongside the organisation’s successes, power dynamics and misfortunes. The space between individual and collective memory will subsequently form part of a publication and an artist-led archive.

Thanks to Arts Council England, Foyle Foundation, Tate Exchange, Ashley Gallant, Denis Fryer, Peter Chesney, Beth Shapeero, Tracey McMaster, Jennifer Muncey, John Harris, Terry Shave, Bo Olawoye and our wonderful volunteer team.
